The history of the Soul Music movement can be traced back to the 1950s and 60s. Two of the rising stars that ended up becoming music legends for years to come were Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin. We don’t know exactly what we are going to find in the years and decades to come but this much can be said for certain, those two were the most influential singers of the century.
I wanted to take a second to give a shout out to them. They heavily influenced my parents and as such were a secondary influence on me and my musical tastes. With the two “queens of soul” now approaching 80 years old, I want to make sure people realize their great influence and extraordinary talent. We shouldn’t have to wait until people pass away to appreciate them. Celebrities have been passing away at record numbers, Alan Rickman, David Bowie, Joe Cocker, and others. I’m just glad that the “rule of three” didn’t come to engulf Dionne and Aretha.
So that’s it, my little rant about the queens of soul and the appreciation of people before they pass on. I recently lost my grandfather at 89, and his passing gave me a great amount of appreciation for those in our lives. For a given time we shouldn’t have to wait until they pass to appreciate them, however it may be inevitable either way. Something about humans, we just don’t know what we got until its gone.
